Become a community health champion
Community Health Champions
Health Works hosts the Community Health Champions in the Southey/Owlerton area of Sheffield.
Community Health Champions are volunteers who support people to eat healthily, be physically active and improve their mental wellbeing, and so help to improve the general wellbeing of people in Sheffield’s least healthy communities. This project is supported by several voluntary and community organisations including ourselves, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield NHS.
Community Health Champions are:
- Volunteers
- Recruited from Sheffield’s least healthy communities
- Passionate about improving the health of their communities
- People with the skills and understanding of health and community engagement they need to make a positive difference
Part of the ‘Altogether Better’ community health programme, Health Champions is managed by the Sheffield Well-being Consortium and delivered by several local health organisations, including Health Works.

Key successes of a Community Health Champion
- Health Works was the most successful organisation delivering this project in Phase 1, easily exceeding its targets
- We are now delivering phase 2 of the project throughout 2010 and are already ahead of our targets
- 14 out of 32 Health Works Health Champions have gone on to paid employment as of December 2010
- 40 Health Champions on the entire programme so far have been employed – Health Works Health Champions comprise over a third of these
- Our Health Champions have promoted the project, including speaking at the regional Altogether Better conference
- Health Works has delivered training on behalf of the Sheffield Well-being Consortium to other organisations delivering the project
