How we help the community
Our Approach
Health Works believes that local people know what is best for themselves and for their communities. The support that we offer empowers people to become more independent and make choices for themselves about what kind of support they need.
Health Works offers a clear progression route for clients as their confidence improves. Many of our clients start off isolated, depressed, or suffer from mental health problems or substance misuse issues. We offer them the opportunity to turn their lives around.
By accessing our services clients improve their health and their participation acts as a stepping stone on their road to recovery. This process helps improve our clients’ fitness, confidence and connectedness to the community they live in.
Every person is different and every person progresses at their own pace. We help the client to set targets which are realistic and achievable for them, and we support them to make small steps which over time make a big difference.
Making a Difference
- In 2009 Anthony Hadfield the filmmaker employed by the regional Altogether Better health project described Health Works as the best Community Project he’d ever seen.
- Health Works continues to have an outstanding reputation with both health professionals and the community. GPs and other health professionals across the city continue to refer patients and clients to our services. Expansion is now needed to meet this demand.
- Most staff and volunteers are local people; this gives them a perspective and understanding of local need that healthcare professionals don’t often have. Through this understanding the organisation continues to deliver activity that meets the needs of the local community. Through this success the organisation has a large pool of people very keen to work for the organisation as volunteers and when opportunities are available to become paid staff.
