About us
Health Works is a specialist health and wellbeing organisation based in Sheffield that works with communities and businesses to improve health through quality of life and regeneration. With over 19 years of health expertise, our dedicated team delivers a wide range of health initiatives and training, individual support, and volunteer opportunities.
There are two different sides to our work:
Community Health Works
Community Health Works is a community health charity that delivers a range of community health activities across the Sheffield City Region (South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire). These include;
• Training
• Activities
• Health improvement consultancy
• Volunteer Development
We work with communities in Sheffield to help local people improve their health and wellbeing, reduce health inequalities and get involved with community development and volunteering. We believe in empowering local people to make a positive difference to themselves and to their communities. From activities such as health walks and art classes, employability and health training, to events themed around health and healthy lifestyles, we deliver services that make a real difference to people’s lives.
Our holistic approach to health and wellbeing makes us a valued partner of the NHS and other voluntary organisations.
Most of our current activity is based in the Southy Owlerton area of North Sheffiled. This is one of the most deprived areas of the UK. Average life expectancy in this area is 12 years lower than in more affluent parts of Sheffiled. Due to the acute health and social problems that persist it is essential that we find funding to continue our work in this area. We are however aware that there are other areas with similar health and related challenges that are also in need of our expertise.
Our approach is based on the asset model of community development. Our approach is advocated by The Marmot Review, The Public Health White Paper and the Fairer Sheffiled Healthy Lives report.
The primary focus of our community work is now supporting areas with health needs in the Sheffiled City Region
Business Health Works
We support businesses and organisations across the UK to reduce employee absenteeism and improve the health and wellbeing of people at work.
In 2007, around 172 million working days were lost to sickness absence, costing the UK economy over £13 billion. Presenteeism (people remaining in work but being inactive) costs business far more. Making employee health a priority not only makes sense for the individuals involved, it also makes good business sense.
We provide absenteeism reduction training courses, healthy team building sessions and ongoing health consultation to help businesses save money through improving the health management of their staff.
Our business support services are available anywhere in the UK, however our current focus is primarily on developing links with employers within the Sheffiled City Region.
